    Job Title: Manager, Risk Management

    (Reference: 039873) Location: Sacramento, CA

    Position Information:
    This is a full time career position located in UC Davis Health System, Department of Risk Management, located in Sacramento, with variable working hours and days. 

    This classification is not represented by a union.

    This position is classified at the MSP Level III OR IV with a salary range of $80,142 - 158,657/yr.

    The Risk Manager directs and coordinates Risk Management activities for the UC Davis Health System. Activities include risk identification, risk analysis/trending, loss prevention/risk reduction and risk management educational programs. Specifically, the Risk Manager ensures that the following objectives of the Risk Management program are met:

    1. Identify and analyze potential and/or actual risks and reduction or elimination of unnecessary and correctable risks and hazards.
    2. Provide comprehensive analysis and reporting of all Professional, General and Employment Claims.
    3. Administer the Medical Claims Review and Advisory and Claims Allocation Committees.
    4. Partner with UCDHS departments to promote and implement loss prevention/control techniques.
    5. Provide consultation to faculty and staff for concerns relative to consent, medical-legal questions, policy and procedure interpretation, insurance and other related issues.
    6. Administer Risk Management educational programs, emphasizing risk reduction/prevention strategies.
    7. Provide and maintain a comprehensive electronic event reporting system.
    8. Respond to requests for certificates of insurance and claims history documents.
    9. Collaborate with the Office of the President Risk Services, Office of General Counsel, the University's third party administrator and defense counsel in supporting the Professional, General and Employment Liability programs.
    10. Provide litigation assistance to UC defense counsel and provide faculty and staff support through the litigation process.


    • License, degree or certification in a healthcare field (e.g., physician, nurse, psychologist, therapist, healthcare administration) with clinical experience.
    • A minimum of 3 years Healthcare Risk Management experience required.
    • Direct management experience (hire, fire and evaluate).

    Basic knowledge of risk principles, including:

    1. Claims management
    2. Program administration
    3. Data management
    4. Risk education

    Standard compliance practices

    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work with a wide variety of individuals.
    • Knowledge of performance improvement methodologies and statistical tools.
    • Excellent organizational skills to establish workload priorities, meet deadlines and retain effectiveness in a complex environment involving heavy workloads and rapidly changing priorities.
    • Strong skills to assimilate large amounts of data in various formats and derive recommendations for approval by a variety of management staff.
    • Excellent writing skills, including editing and proofreading.
    • Demonstrated experience with various software applications, including word processing, database and spreadsheet applications, presentation software.
    • Demonstrated ability to perform data searches, process inquiries and reports and combine information from a variety of sources into meaningful reports.
    • Demonstrated ability to independently gather information through interviews and research.
    • Demonstrated ability to handle challenging situations that may involve adverse outcomes.
    • Strong analytical skills.


    • Strong leadership skills in a healthcare risk management environment
    • Demonstrated mentoring experience and skills
    • Certification in Risk (i.e. CPHRM, LHCRM, HCRM)
    • JD or LNC preferred
